| Your damned musical education! Pt. 1.1: Elbow |

Who?! Elbow is a band out of Manchester, England. Their fifth album, Build a Rocket Boys! was just released. We'll get to it later. Songs A cover of Joni Mitchell's River; Grounds for Divorce. Why these songs matters Usually, I'm not a huge fan of covers, save for anything David Gray does (he'll be in another part, so watch for him!) but this one is completely brilliant. I don't really like Joni Mitchell. In fact, I don't even really like this song, but the fact that Guy Garvey (the lead singer) can put emotion into the song as well as make it interesting makes it one not to miss. When you put it against Grounds for Divorce, you can really see the band's range. You may have heard this song in the background of the odd TV programme and not really noticed it, but individually, it stands out. While River is sensual and soft, Grounds turns teenage angst into something a bit more grown-up. The grit of the song conveys feeling without going overboard, whilst the outstanding drums add another hard element that is often overlooked in other bands. I also like the pint glass banging in the video because it's cool.
Now that you've seen my part, this is where you chime in! Do you agree with me or disagree? Which song do you like better, if you have a preference? Which song do you feel conveys the emotions best? What are your starting thoughts of Elbow if this is the first time you've heard them, or thoughts in general if you've heard a few songs. |
